The Jeep legend began in November 1940, in the early days of World War II, just a year before the United States entered the war. A small, four-wheel drive prototype, the Willys "Quad", was delivered to the US Army. The Jeep Brand 4x4 emerged a hero to thousands of Allied soldiers around the world. The equally heroic civilian Jeep vehicles of the 1940s firmly established the Jeep Brand as the undisputed leader in 4x4 technology. The word “Jeep” became a registered trademark of Willys-Overland in 1950. A short three years later, the company was sold to Henry J. Kaiser for $60.8 million and became Willys Motors Inc. In 1970 Kaiser sold the company to American Motors(AMC)for approximately $75 million. Jeep remained an AMC brand until 1987, when American Motors Corporation was sold to Chrysler Corporation and the Jeep Brand became a part of Chrysler Corporation’s Jeep/Eagle Division. In 1998, the German Daimler-Benz merged with the Chrysler Corporation (including the Jeep Brand) for $36 billion. This continued until the parent company Chrysler Group LLC entered into a global alliance with Fiat SpA in 2009. Fiat S.p.A. purchased the Chrysler Group in 2014 for $3.65 billion and was renamed FCA US LLC, to reflect the Fiat-Chrysler merger. FCA US LLC remains the current day name of the company that owns the Jeep brand. Jeep has gone global enjoying record profits after the introduction of many new vehicles including the Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Renegade, and Jeep Compass.
